What types of energy storage are available in Canada?

There are three main types of energy storage currently commercially available in Canada: Storage is playing an increasingly important role in the electricity system by improving grid reliability and power quality, and by complementing variable renewable energy sources (VRES) like wind and solar.

Where is energy storage installed in Canada?

At the time of this being written, there is currently energy storage installed in four provinces in Canada: Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan & PEI. There are several additional projects slotted for development in these provinces in the coming years, as well as in New Brunswick & Nova Scotia. Can energy storage technology work with all fuel sources?

Why is energy storage important?

Energy storage can also serve as a backup if power generation is interrupted, boosting the reliability and resilience of the system, and helping to reduce the negative environmental impacts of increased energy demand through the support of renewables, a reduced need for generation, and avoiding peaking.

When did energy storage start in Canada?

The first energy storage project in Canada, the Sir Adam Beck Pump Generating Station, came online in 1957. However, the next project did not come online until 2013. There are three main types of energy storage currently commercially available in Canada:
