What is solar thermal energy storage?

How does thermal energy storage work?

These include the two-tank direct system, two-tank indirect system, and single-tank thermocline system. Solar thermal energy in this system is stored in the same fluid used to collect it. The fluid is stored in two tanks—one at high temperature and the other at low temperature.

Known as pumped thermal electricity storage—or PTES—these systems use grid electricity and heat pumps to alternate between heating and cooling materials in tanks—creating stored energy that can then be used to generate power as needed.
