What is a 48V solar inverter?

A 48V solar inverter converts direct current (DC) generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC), specifically designed for 48V battery systems. Its higher voltage design minimizes energy loss during transmission, making it ideal for medium-to-high power applications such as home energy storage, small farms, or communication towers.

How big should a solar inverter be?

To account for power losses assume an 80 percent efficiency. Your solar inverter should have a similar or slightly higher wattage rating than the DC output of your solar panels (which in this case is 4.5 kW). You can size it between 1.15 and 1.5 times larger. The rule of thumb is to size your inverter 1.25 bigger than your solar array.

How to choose a solar inverter?

Choose an inverter that has a surge watt rating equal to or greater than this value. As for voltage drop, check the wire length between your solar panels and the batteries. If the wire length is long, you may need to choose a lower voltage system (12V, 24V, or 48V) to minimize voltage drop.
