Technical FAQs 4

What are diffractive optical elements?

Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) are optical components that deflect light into multiple orders at precise angles. Periodicity and their spatial frequencies, rather than the surface topography profile, determine the optical performance. The simplest DOE profile is binary: two profile planes produce the required phase shift of the light.

What is double refraction?

Accessed 23 November 2025. Double refraction, an optical property in which a single ray of unpolarized light entering an anisotropic medium is split into two rays, each traveling in a different direction. One ray is bent, or refracted, at an angle, and the other passes through the medium unchanged.

What happens if a ray enters a crystal in double refraction?

If the incident ray enters the crystal along the direction of its optic axis, however, the light ray will not become divided. In double refraction, the ordinary ray and the extraordinary ray are polarized in planes vibrating at right angles to each other.

Can diffractive lens be used as a flat optical element?

The use of a diffractive lens as a flat optical element can be beneficial in order to limit the volume of a conventional optical system and correct chromatic aberration. Generation of arbitrary far-field profiles with a well-defined angular distribution for partial incoherent light.
