Where is the Northern Lights CO2 storage facility located?

On September 26, Norwegian Minister of Energy Terje Aasland led the official opening of the Northern Lights CO2 transport and storage facility in Øygarden, near Bergen. This project is developed by a joint venture between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies in collaboration with the Norwegian government.

How much storage does the Northern Lights CCS project have?

The Northern Lights CCS project off the coast of Norway has enough storage for the equivalent of 750,000 car emissions every year in the first phase. Equinor’s Smeaheia storage site, located to the south of Northern Lights, has the potential to increase storage capacity many times over.

Where is CO2 stored in Norway?

CO₂ is safely and permanently stored 2,600 meters beneath the seabed in the North Sea. Norway has over 25 years of experience with safe CO₂ storage. Longship is a technological and political breakthrough that lays the foundation for a new green industry in Norway and Europe.

How much does CO2 management cost in Norway?

The total estimated cost of the project, including ten years of operation, is around NOK 34 billion. The investment is backed by the Norwegian Parliament and aims to develop CO₂ management as a cost-effective climate measure. ‘This is an investment in future jobs, technology, and industry.
