Do solar inverters need AFCI protection?

These rules mandate that all solar inverters operating at any DC voltage higher than 120 V have to include AFCI protection to prevent fires caused by arc faults. Solar inverters without AFCIs were still allowed until the end of 2024, but from 2025 onwards, compliance is mandatory for certification and safety inspections.

What happens after DC arcing protection function is enabled?

After the DC arcing protection function of the inverter is enabled, the inverter will test the input current of each string in real time. After the characteristic current phenomenon of the arc (as shown in the figure above) is tested, the inverter will immedi-ately switch off the AC side and report an error.
