Do off-grid solar systems improve energy access?

In 2017, off-grid solar products, including solar home systems enabled by PAYG models, provided improved energy access to 83.7 million people globally (GOGLA and Lighting Global, 2017). Between 2015 and 2020, around 8 million people gained energy access with PAYG models (Lighting Global, GOGLA and ESMAP, 2020).

What is off-grid solar?

Off-grid solar (OGS) energy provides an opportunity to increase energy access. Technology costs have fallen dramatically, and new business models, such as pay-as-you-go (PAYG), are addressing longstanding issues of affordability.

Can off-grid solar technology be used for financing?

In some cases, existing off-grid solar technologies have a natural synergy with innovative financing instruments. For example, PAYG companies already collect a lot of data that could be utilized for algorithm-based credit assessments alongside more traditional due diligence.

How are interest payments made in off-grid solar (OGS) companies?

The first interest payments were disbursed in October 2017. All transactions and interest payments are made through mobile money. This chapter describes three equity financing instruments relevant to off-grid solar (OGS) companies at different stages of the business lifecycle: common stock, preferred stock, and equity crowdfunding.
