What is a grounding wire?

Most electrical systems (e.g., car batteries, electrical sockets, and domestic appliances) incorporate a grounding wire. This grounding wire is intentionally designed to connect to the earth, taking advantage of the ground's capacity to dissipate surplus electric charge.

Why do I need a ground wire & neutral wire?

Having a separate ground wire and neutral wire provides protection from shock hazards due to a fault between a hot wire, and a conductive chassis of an appliance or other device. Sometimes a hot wire in an appliance will come into electrical contact with an exposed conductive chassis.
