How Does An Extended-Range Electric Vehicle Work? Also known as range extenders, or EREVs for short, these electric vehicles trade some battery capacity for an onboard generator. One of electric vehicles’ biggest problems is their battery pack.

A range-extended electric vehicle (REEV), or an extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV), is a battery electric vehicle that runs on electricity but includes an auxiliary power unit known as a ‘range extender’.

Why do electric vehicles have a range extender?

This allows for an increased range from the vehicle. Range-extended electric vehicles reduce emissions because they can be operated in zero emission mode for around 50 to 100 miles, before the range extender engine is used.

What are the requirements for a range-extended battery EV?

According to the 2012 Amendments to the Zero Emission Vehicle Regulations, a range-extended battery EV should comply, among others, with the following criteria : The APU must provide a range less than or equal to the main battery range. The APU must not be switched on until the main battery charge has been depleted.
