How much solar power will Tunisia have in 2024?

With aims to install 1,700 MW of renewable energy capacity between 2024 and 2026, Tunisia has launched a number of international tenders. The tenders call for the development of 800 MW of solar power and 600 MW of wind power on investor-proposed sites and 300 MW of solar power on state-proposed sites in Sidi Bouzid and Gabes.

The Tunisian Solar Plan foresees a share of renewable electricity of 35% and an installed capacity of 4GW by 2030. In 2021, Tunisia had achieved only 400 MW, with the majority stemming from wind power and smaller amounts in solar and Hydropower. Up to 2000, Tunisia was mostly self-sufficient when it came to energy.

How will Tunisia bolster its solar energy capacity?

To bolster its solar energy capacity, the Tunisian government signed agreements with renewable energy firms Scatec and Aelous to build solar plants in Sidi Bouzid and Tozeur. Each 50 MW plant represents a combined investment of €79 million, with construction underway and operations planned to commence in 2025.

According to the Energy General Direction of the Tunisian Ministry of Energy and Mines, 650 MW will come from solar photovoltaic, while the residual 350 MW will be supplied by wind energy.
