What happens if a grid is in surplus?

At times of high electricity demand, extra capacity must be immediately available or the grid risks shutting down. One way of ensuring continuous and sufficient access to electricity is to store energy when it is in surplus and feed it into the grid when there is an extra need for electricity.

Can storing surplus power be extended in the future?
