What is an energy island?

The energy island will be a floating structure, supported by mooring lines, and designed to collectively generate renewable energy. The basic components include modular floating foundations, mooring systems and inter-module connections, and energy conversion devices.

How can artificial islands be used to generate energy?

TNO has been researching the large-scale generation, conversion, storage, and distribution of energy between countries for some time now. Artificial islands are to form energy hubs that can convert electricity generated by wind farms into, for example, hydrogen, and then transport it to the connected countries.

What are floating modular energy Islands?

Floating modular energy islands (FMEIs) are modular, interconnected floating structures designed to collectively produce, store, convert, and transport renewable energy. This review aims to establish a foundation for developing innovative approaches to sustainably harness multi-energy sources in offshore environments.

Are energy Islands profitable?

The energy islands must be designed in such a way that they are profitable for all stakeholders. That is why we are also investigating the functioning of the energy market and trade between market parties. This includes (at times divergent) policies and legislation in the countries concerned.
