Can Pakistani coal be used in power plants?

The Sahiwal Coal Power Plant, China Hub Coal Power Plant, and Port Qasim Coal Plant rely on coal imported from South Africa. Imported coal-fired power plants are technically quite different from indigenous coal-fired plants, which is why it is not possible to use Pakistani coal in these plants.

What type of coal is used in Pakistan?

Where are coal reserves located in Pakistan?

The greatest concentration of coal reserves in Pakistan lies in the Thar region of Sindh, which is estimated to have 175 billion tonnes of reserves (ibid). Given that a third of all the coal power plants are located in Thar region, local cost of coal for power plants running on indigenous coal is relatively low (see section 1.6.).

Why does Pakistan need cheap coal?

As in other Asia-Pacific countries, the ready availability of cheap coal in Pakistan has underpinned the economic and energy growth model, where coal has formed the central pillar for the expansion of power generation capacity.
