What happens when solar radiation hits a glass surface?

When solar radiation strikes a glass surface, some of it is transmitted, some of it is absorbed and some of it is reflected. The absorbed component increases the temperature of the glass and the heat is slowly conducted (released) to the outside and inside depending on the difference in temperature.

What are the components of heat gain through glass?

The heat gain components through glass consists of solar radiation and conduction. Solar radiation is considered in two parts - direct and diffuse (or scatter). Diffuse radiation is the solar radiation that is absorbed, stored and scattered in the atmosphere.

Why is glass temperature a state variable?

The glass temperature is a function of the rate of cooling and the pressure at which it was determined. At a specified rate of cooling and pressure, is a corresponding state variable for the viscoelastic properties and applications of noncrystalline polymers ( Mark et al., 2004; Plazek and Ngai, 1996 ).

The glass temperature TG for a polymer is a criterion of creep resistance, in much the way that TM is for a metal or a ceramic. For most polymers, TG is close to room temperature. Well below TG, the polymer is a glass (often containing crystalline regions— Chapter 5) and is a brittle, elastic solid; rubber, cooled in liquid nitrogen, is an example.
