Can a multi-beam base station be used in a 5G mobile communication system?

Abstract: The fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication system will require the multi-beam base station. By taking into account millimeter wave use, any antenna types such as an array, reflector and dielectric lens antennas are possible for a base station application.

What is a base station antenna?

The base station antennas transmit and receive RF (radio frequency) signals, or radio waves, to and from mobile phones near the base station. Without these radio waves, mobile communications would not be possible. Radio waves have been used for communication for more than 100 years. Radio and television broadcasting are well-known examples of this.

Are base station antennas omnidirectional or directional?

Base station antennas are available in different shapes and sizes and can be either omnidirectional antennas or directional antennas. The operating frequency, coverage area, range, and other performance parameters can vary depending on the base station antenna that is chosen for a specific network.
